Slide-lock models have a grey sliding button built into the scale of the knife. ~~Under t~~he button is ~~a small~~ spring-loaded ~~metal shaft~~ that can move backwards and forwards. When the blade is opened, a slot in the blade spring under the blade is exposed and the small spring un~~der~~ the button automatically pushes the ~~shaf~~t forward into the slot, preventing the blade spring from moving and ~~theref~~ore the blade from closing. To release the lock, the button is slid back and the metal shaft under the blade is pulled away, freeing the blade spring and allowing the blade to rotate and fold closed. See diagrams below.

When the blade is opened, a slot in the blade spring under the blade is exposed and the small spring in the button automatically pushes the button forward, so that the metal shaft slides into the slot, preventing the blade spring from moving, and consequently the blade from closing. To release the lock, the button is slid back, and the metal shaft in the blade spring slot under the blade is pulled away, freeing the blade spring, and therefore allowing the blade to rotate and fold closed.
